Since Pfeil first started working on the<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><a data-crackerjax="#post-slider" href="http://mashable.com/2013/11/12/panono-ball-camera/" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;">Panono camera</a>, a ball-shaped device that captures photo "spheres," back in 2011, the field of 360-degree imagery has exploded.</div>

But the emphasis now is on 360-degree video, not still pictures. Pfeil, however, stayed focused. The Panono is for still pictures only, just as his highly successful<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><a href="https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/panono-panoramic-ball-camera#/story" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Indiegogo campaign</a><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>promised (he also got funding from other sources). It would also retain its signature twist: The camera captures photos when you throw it upward, taking the shot at the moment it reaches its highest point.</div>

Now, after a year's delay, that vision is realized. The Panono Explorer Edition will ship in September, and when it does it'll be the<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><a data-crackerjax="#post-slider" href="http://mashable.com/2013/12/23/panono-108-megapixel/" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;">highest-resolution still camera</a><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>you can buy. The 360-degree images it captures will technically be 108-megapixel photos — stitched together from the array of 3-megapixel lenses that dot the exterior of the ball.</div>

"There are other panoramic cameras, but they all do lower than 20 megapixels," Pfeil told<i style="font-style: italic;">Mashable</i>. "That's not a useful resolution for panoramas. You want to see people's faces at 10 feet."</div>

The Panono looks almost exactly like the mock-up Pfeil showed us in 2013 when he was launching his crowd-funding campaign. The camera is about the size of a grapefruit, and feels just as heavy. The plastic exterior is sprinkled with small, slightly indented lenses, and it has rubberized green trim, which provides a better grip.</div>

On one of the ball's poles there's an LED and a trigger button; on the other is a cap that covers the microUSB port and connector for a removable handle. The Panono itself has 16GB of storage, but those 108 MP pics fill it up quick. It'll hold only about 600 photos. Luckily, the camera is built to connect with an app (which is on iOS now, and Android "soon") that relays the photos to the cloud.</div>

The cloud is where they need to go anyway, since software does the heavy lifting of stitching together all the tiny pics to put together a smooth photo sphere. And it does a great job. The spheres have excellent detail, even when zoomed in, and I couldn't detect any rough patches (judge for yourself<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><a href="https://app.panono.com/explore" style="color: #00aeef; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">here</a>). If you use the handle, it's cleverly erased from the pic.</div>

You can then use the accompanying app to view the photos (using the screen as a window into the sphere), and you can share them with links and embeds, like most media. Pfeil says they're even compatible with virtual-reality headsets.</div>

"If you own a VR headset, you probably want to own a Panono as well to take high-resolution still images," he says. "But you can view panoramas in many other ways."</div>

Second is the price. The Explorer Edition costs $1,499 — a tall order, even for early adopters. Pfeil says he's gotten enough interest from supporters that he'll sell his initial production run, partly because it's limited to only 1,000 units.</div>

The consumer version, in addition to being more durable, will cost just $599 — a benefit of manufacturing at scale, Pfeil says. Indiegogo backers get their choice of the Explorer Edition now or the Consumer Edition later.</div>

But in a world where VR and 360-degree video now dominate the space, is a 360-degree camera interesting enough to catch on? Pfeil thinks so, comparing his ball of tricks to a DSLR in a cameraphone world.</div>

"If you want to do video, your resolution is going to be super-low. A panoramic video camera is a different optimization. The technology isn't there to do both — video and high resolution photos. We concentrate on still images, and do them at a useful resolution."</div>

In what might be one of the world’s strangest Independence Day fireworks displays, Indonesia sank 38 boats seized for illegal fishing this week. Four were local, but 34 of them came from neighboring countries like Vietnam, the Philippines, Thailand and Malaysia.</div>

As part of Indonesia’s 70th Independence Day festivities, five of the boats were laden with small explosives and sent to the bottom of the ocean Tuesday. Taiwan also has many fishing vessels in the area and has been warned against illegal fishing by Jakarta in the past. We just fine and punish and detain, we don’t burn down the fishing boats aggressively like Indonesia.”</div>

An official at the maritime affairs ministry says only a few boats are actually blown up with explosives for environmental reasons, while the rest are scuttled in a less flamboyant manner. To avoid harming coral, they are all sunk at a depth of 40 meters or more. Indonesian authorities state that all of the sunken boats underwent due judicial process.</div>

Vietnam has vowed to better educate its fishermen on the appropriate laws and regulations, but it hopes that Jakarta will treat Vietnamese fishing boats with “with a spirit of traditional friendship and strategic partnership.”</div>
